Gems can be ground into powder using a Quern. Gem powders are particularly useful in Coloring Glass.

Through Sluicing and Panning, Uncut Gems can be obtained. The gem that can be obtained with the sluice is tied to the rock type of the deposit being processed.

Gems have higher Hardness values than regular ore, requiring different strength tools to break them. This summarizes the minimum Pickaxe tier required to break a gem ore block:

• Amethyst: Steel
• Diamond: Black Steel
• Emerald: Steel
• Lapis Lazuli: Wrought Iron
• Opal: Wrought Iron
• Pyrite: Copper
• Ruby: Black Steel
• Sapphire: Black Steel
• Topaz: Steel

To cut a gem, you must craft Sandpaper. Sandpaper is made from Black Sand, Flux, Glue, any Gem Powder, and Paper. Crafting an uncut gem with sandpaper cuts the gem.
